September 2008 Newsletter
The August meeting was sponsored jointly by DWC and the Democratic Club to host a forum for the local Democratic candidates. Approximately 125 people attended to hear presentations by the candidates and to participate in a question and answer period. It was deemed a huge success by those attending.
The local primary was held on August 6. David Fetterman and Tom Fullman were successful in their campaigns and will be representing Democrats in the November election.
September 13th Meeting - This meeting will feature the delegates who attended the Democratic National Convention in Denver. They will relate their experiences which should be fascinating!
There will also be a door prize! So don’t miss this interesting meeting at 10:00 am on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Stuart Woman's Club. Our social time is from 10:00-10:30, and the meeting is from 10:30 to 11:30.
Upcoming meetings:
October 11th Meeting - At this meeting, Janie Holman, President of the Florida Democratic Women’s Club will speak to us.
Attending with her will be Terry Mahoney, wife of Congressman Mahoney. We will be inviting the Port St. Lucie Democratic Women’s Club to join us.
November Meeting - This will be a victory celebration for the Democratic Party and will be held in the evening. We will have a catered dinner. Cost for members is $10.00 and for non-members $15.00.
Fundraiser:
The Board of Directors has signed a contract with the Lyric Theatre to be a sponsor for The Capitol Steps in January. This is the only fundraiser scheduled and we will only have 50 tickets to sell. Tickets will cost the DWC $42.00 each and we will sell them for $55.00. There will be flyers and a sign-up sheet at the September meeting. Don’t miss this chance to see this wonderful show and to support our club!
Featured Board Member:
This month we are featuring Daisy Carter, our 1st Vice President. In her role on the Board, she arranges the monthly meetings by contacting perspective guest speakers. She is so efficient she has all the programs planned until January!
Daisy was raised here in Stuart until she went to college in Philadelphia. She had a successful career in the Philadelphia
Department of Recreation and has many testimonials and awards to her contributions there. She returned to live in Stuart in 1999.
In an article featuring Daisy in The Stuart News on January 20, 2000, Daisy is quoted as saying it was the close, caring community in the black section of Stuart where she grew up that motivated her to become a successful businesswoman. She stated that she encountered more racism in the City of Brotherly Love than in Stuart, Florida. However, she does remember attending the Lyric Theatre for movies when there was a curtain to separate the races.
Ironically, Daisy now serves on the Board of Directors of the Lyric Theatre. Daisy was also appointed by the Stuart City Commission to membership on the Recreation Advisory Committee on June 12, 2000. As you can see, Daisy continues to be a vital force in her community and we are fortunate to have Daisy as a Board Member of the Democratic Women’s Club.
See you on Saturday, September 13th!
